Butland brilliance earns Stoke a point at Norwich

Norwich City
1 - 1
Stoke City

Carrow Road

22nd August 2015 3pm

Attendance: 26, 771

Referee:

Stoke City survived an onslaught by newly promoted Norwich at Carrow Road to earn a point.

Mame Biram Diouf opened the scoring, meeting Xherdan Shaqiri, who was making his Stoke debut, freekick with a neat header before Russell Martin equalised for the Canaries.

The Potters were fortunate to come away with a point and have Goalkeeper Jack Butland to thank for their second point of the campaign.

The England international goalkeeper made six saves, with a late flurry of world class saves to keep Norwich's attack out.

Mark Hughes made one change to his side that drew at White Hart with record signing Xherdan Shaqiri coming in for his debut to replace the ill Jonathan Walters, who had been suffering from a virus.

Walters had also been subject to a transfer offer from Norwich, as he has been stalling on a new contract at the Britannia Stadium.

The Potters took the lead early on when Xherdan Shaqiri put in a inch perfect cross from the right which Diouf attacked and headed home confidently past John Ruddy.

It wasn't long though until Norwich were level when captain Russell Martin fired through Butland's legs to level.

Stoke were the stronger side in the first half but could only really create a handful of half chances. Stoke's new signing were struggling to gel but there was the odd brief spell of encouraging signs.

The second half was a completely different match, with Norwich dominant.

The Carrow Road faithful will be bitterly disappointed not come away with all three points.

Butland made a number of brilliant saves to thwart Cameron Jerome, Graham Dorrans and Nathan Redmond.

For all of Norwich's dominance they nearly lost it when the ball fell to second half substitute Joselu in acres in the area, but the Spainard fired over from 8 yards.

The former Real Madrid forward's miss was nearly punished by Bradley Johnson who nearly turned the ball in from 6 yards, but Butland was once again there to turn the ball over acrobatically to ensure the Potters a point.
