Late Cisse strike sinks Stoke

A stoppage time Papa Cisse volley snatched Newcastle all three points as they came from behind to beat Stoke at St. James' Park.

Stoke had earlier taken the lead after Jonathan Walters was fouled in the area after he was clattered by Cheick Tiote, before he dusted himself off and bravely dispatched the penalty.

The Irish striker had previously missed his last 2 spot kicks.

Stoke's plan of keeping it characteristically tight at the back and launching counter-attacks seemed to be working, but after they found the net, the team couldn't keep hold of the lead long.

Cabaye quickly put the Magpies level within 5 minutes with an excellently executed free kick.

Glenn Whelan had previously gave the ball away and coupled with poor defending allowed the Magpies to surge up field and force Begovic to breach his area and foul Sissoko, resulting in Cabaye's free kick.

With the game looking destined for a draw, and the Potters looking happy at this prospect, Cisse stole in, in the dying embers of the fixture to capture Alan Pardew's men all 3 points, and give them their third come-from-behind home victory on the bounce.

The Senegalese striker took advantage of Stoke's makeshift centre half pairing of Marc Wilson and Ryan Shawcross by latching on to Sylvain Marveaux pass after beating the Potters' offside trap, which was scuppered by Wilson's failure to step up, and coolly smashed a volley past Begovic from 8 yards.

Cisse was lucky to be on the pitch at the time of the goal in some people eyes, especially those of Stoke manager Tony Pulis, after the striker reacted angrily to clash with Irish international Marc Wilson.

Referee Michael Oliver deemed that the incident only warranted a yellow card each for the pair.

The win for the Tyneside outfit makes it 4 wins out of 6 and their recent resurgent has seen them move up to 13th.

The defeat for Tony Pulis' men maintains the worse record in the Premier League this calendar year, with Stoke only winning once in 2013.

Stoke still only have one away victory to their name this season.

If Stoke can't get out of their recent rut, then the Potteries outfit will have to look over their shoulders nervously as they could still yet be dragged into the relegation battle at the foot of the division.

Star Player

Ryan Shotton- Once again the young academy graduate proved me wrong and put in a good shift down the right wing, where he tested Davide Santon, whilst also tracking back and helping out Geoff Cameron when the Italian full back ventured forward with some well timed tackles.
