Shawcross - This Weekend Is An Opportunity

Shawcross - This Weekend Is An Opportunity

Stoke City skipper Ryan Shawcross has said that the side have to look at Brighton as a valuable opportunity to get back on track following defeat to Bournemouth in the last game.

Having slipped to a two one defeat at Dean Court having held the lead from the fifth to the 70th minute, Shawcross knew it was a huge blow to the side but he knew they were determined to make up for it this weekend.

Hosting promoted Brighton at the Bet365 Stadium in the next fixture, victory would see us go level with Chris Hughton's side and if results elsewhere were to go our way, we would climb out of the dropzone.

Shawcross told the Official Website that it was too good an opportunity for the players to let pass them by as we look to improve confidence and our own form this season.

'We`re gutted because we put in a decent performance for 70 minutes and dipped off at Bournemouth, that`s something we`ll have to take a serious look at this week. We`re massively disappointed; we want to get out of the situation we`re in so we`ll have to fight to get as many points as possible and Brighton is now a huge game for us. It`s pivotal we have that battling spirit from now until the end of the season, we need teams to be scared coming to our place.'

Shawcross was clear in how he wanted us to play in the game, calling on the squad to press Brighton into making mistakes and ensuring that we were the side on the front foot and making things happen, as too often this season we've been forced into reacting to things and not setting the tone.

'We`re all fighters; we`re desperate to get out of the situation we`re in and from now until the end of the season we need that us-against-them mentality, sticking together and getting those points we need. It will be a tough game, they got a good win at the weekend, but if we get the points then it lifts everyone and hopefully us out of the relegation zone.'
