Lambert Becomes New Stoke Manager

Lambert Becomes New Stoke Manager

Former Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Paul Lambert has today been appointed as Mark Hughes replacement at Stoke City.

Having begun his playing career at St Mirren and lifted the Scottish Cup in the 1986/87 season, he then spent three years with Motherwell before he headed to Germany and the Bundesliga in 1996.

Having helped play his part in a successful Champions League campaign in his first season, he later headed back to Glasgow and signed for Celtic tasting more success with them over the next eight seasons.

His time at Celtic saw him pick up four Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups, as well as finishing as runner up in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup campaign.

He began his managerial career with Livingston, before he headed to Wycombe Wanderers in 2006. Having taken them to the League Cup semi finals and League Two play offs, he made the switch to Colchester United and after one year with them he made the move to Norwich City.

His time at Carrow Road was undoubtedly his most successful time in management so far, with back to back promotions taking them from League One into the Premier League and having secured their top flight status he moved to Aston Villa.

After a number of years at Villa Park, he helped Blackburn Rovers to stay in the Championship in 2015 and then he spent another short term spell at Wolves.

The 48 year old has signed a two and a half year deal and will take charge officially on Tuesday where he'll be introduced to the media.

Speaking to the Official Website Peter Coates said of his appointment.

'Paul greatly impressed us with his knowledge of our squad and had a clear plan of how he would improve our results. He`s a man who backed himself as a player, none more so than when he turned down contract offers in Scotland to go on trial in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, and it`s obvious he adopts the same approach as a manager.'

He added.

'Paul has been successful in management at clubs with a strong and stable background and with local ownership - the kind of foundation we are able to give to our managers. We were determined to appoint someone with Premier League experience or an extensive knowledge of English football. We look forward to working with Paul and supporting him to help achieve our goals.'

Lambert will be watching from the stands at Old Trafford later tonight as we face Manchester United, Eddie Niedzwiecki will remain in charge of team affairs - assisted by Kevin Russell and Andy Quy - ahead of Lambert beginning the job properly tomorrow.

Mmm I hope this works out for you! Seems a strange one, was Hughes really that bad?
