Instant Reactions - Coventry v Stoke (6/1/18)

Following today's clash between Coventry City and Stoke City, here are the instant reactions from both managers.

Coventry City hosted Stoke City at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday January 6, and the hosts took the scalp of their Premier League opponents in a two one victory.

The home side took the advantage in the 24th minute as Jordan Willis headed into the back of the net and although a Charlie Adam penalty had the visitors back on level terms nine minutes into the second half, Jack Grimmer scored the winner 20 minutes from time to produce one of the shocks of the day.

Stoke will be disappointed with the result as they dominated possession and efforts overall (24) but they managed the same number on target as Coventry and that was ultimately their downfall as they slipped to their sixth defeat in the last eight matches.

Mark Hughes was subsequently dismissed from his position as manager.

Teams:

Coventry:

O'Brien, Grimmer, Willis, Davies, Stokes, Maguire-Drew (Stevenson 63), Bayliss, Doyle, Shipley (Haynes 85), Biamou, McNulty.

Substitutes:

Burge, Hyam, Maycock, Finn, Ponticelli.

Stoke:

Butland, Zouma, Cameron (Crouch 52), Wimmer, Edwards, Allen, Ireland (Choupo-Moting 73), Adam (Shaqiri 75), Sobhi, Berahino, Diouf.

Substitutes:

Afellay, Fletcher, Grant, Souttar.

Speaking to the BBC's cameras a short time after match day referee Martin Atkinson blew the final whistle, Coventry City manager Mark Robins explained.

'For us it's brilliant, we're in the fourth-round draw. Hopefully we'll get a big club away from home - Manchester United away would be perfect. I'm proud. Regardless of the current troubles at Stoke, and the pressure on them, we equipped ourselves really well. We went toe-to-toe with them. We could have been 3-0 up in the first half. The atmosphere was outstanding and the supporters desperately want to grab on to something. They're the lifeblood of the club. Some are staying away at the moment but we want them back. We're trying to build something. It's an outstanding achievement, against a team full of stars, some of whom will be playing in internationals and at the World Cup this summer. To come out and not scrap or hold on, we were deserved winners.'

Stoke City's Mark Hughes in his comparative interview explained.

'It's clearly a difficult time for us. When we make mistakes, they're getting penalised. We're not giving ourselves the right defensive platform at the moment and when that happens you're always vulnerable. Clearly, the only way to quieten down the noise around the club is to win games. We need to turn it around and quickly. We're good enough in this league - we've proved it during my tenure - but we've got to be better in key moments. We're all under pressure. I can take the pressure and the focus. I'm not naive and I realise people will talk about my position. But we've got good owners who will make the right decisions for the club. They have done before and they'll do it again.'
