Hughes On Deserved Watford Win

Hughes On Deserved Watford Win

Manager Mark Hughes has praised the Stoke City players for taking what he believed was a thoroughly deserved victory over Watford at the weekend.

Heading to Vicarage Road for the game, a Darren Fletcher goal early on the first half was enough to return all three points as Stoke got back to winning ways following last weekend's defeat to Bournemouth.

Hughes delighted centred around the game management of the side as although the hosts had the possession and far greater chances, they didn't register an effort on goal.

Speaking to the Official Website as he met with the media for his post game press conference, a delighted Welshman explained.

'It was a great performance from us, particularly as the away side. We had a gameplay today and executed it to absolute perfection, which maybe hasn't been the case in the two fixtures prior to this one.'

Hughes went on to say.

'We looked at what they do and what they like to do and we managed to nullify their threats, and look very dangerous on the break at the other end too. Over the course of the 90 minutes I think it is fair to say that we had buy far the greater opportunities to score goals, not least Charlie at the end who managed to hit the post with the goal at his mercy.'

The manager added.

'It was a huge victory for us today which was secured by big performances from every player out there on the pitch, who showed a tremendous amount of character to dig out the win.'

With Fletcher scoring from the corner, Hughes was quick to credit assistant gaffer Mark Bowen for his work on that front, alongside him, as game footage was scoured for an advantage.

'We practised it, believe it or not, because a lot of people would have you believe we don't actually work on set-pieces, but clearly we do. We could see that they like to pack the six-yard box with bodies on set-pieces, particularly corners, so we wanted to get the ball out to the edge of the box and hope we could make something happen that way.'

Hughes added.

'I have to say that the first couple of attempts at it in training didn't place a great deal of good will in our hearts to be perfectly honest. Thankfully though, Darren has caught it incredibly sweet when it really mattered to win us the game, and his goal side, like everybody else, I thought he was absolutely top drawer today.'
