Edwards Takes Hughes' Praise

Edwards Takes Hughes' Praise

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has said that youngster Tom Edwards had fully deserved his debut at the weekend in the game against Manchester City.

The Stafford born 18 year old was handed his senior starting debut at the Etihad Stadium as we faced Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, but despite how bad a day it was for Stoke as we eventually lost seven two, Hughes was pleased to see him give his all and show some of his qualities in the game.

Despite being given a torrid time by City's attack, he laid on the cross for Mame Diouf to score our second and Hughes feels we can expect big things in the future from him as he continues to develop.

Speaking to the Official Website as he spoke with club press on Monday, Hughes said that having been around the first team this season, signing his first professional contract over the summer, he'd shown enough that he was ready for a senior test.

'I thought he did really well in difficult circumstances to be perfectly honest. He would have played before now if he hadn`t have picked up an injury in pre-season because I think he`s ready to play first team football.'

He added.

'He`s a player we have high hopes for. He`s certainly not the finished article but he works hard, has an appetite to learn and deserved his opportunity.'

With Edwards going off injured in the 53rd minute of the tie, Hughes went on to give a brief update on him.

'He`s picked up a real bang on his ankle as a result of a block tackle and we`ll just have to check on him. It`s too early to determine the extent of the injury. We just hope he hasn`t done any significant damage.'
