Hughes Pleased With The Campaign So Far

On the back of three points against Southampton at the weekend, manager Mark Hughes has declared himself pleased with Stoke's start to the 2017/18 campaign.

With goals from Mame Diouf and Peter Crouch on the day giving us a two one victory, Stoke now sit in 13th place in the Premier League table with a return of eight points from seven games, and with a pretty tough opening two months as we go into the October international break now, Hughes was relatively pleased with where we found ourselves.

Speaking to the Official Website as he met with the media following the game, Hughes also reflected on the season so far and his pleasure at returning to winning ways after our recent run of results.

'It`s important and it was a big three points for us yesterday. We got a good reward for our efforts, in terms of our performance we`ve played better and you`ve got to give credit to Southampton because they like to keep the ball away from you.'

With the players showing signs of tiredness, especially with the run of defensive injuries of late, Hughes praised the team for digging deep and now it was about using the international break sensibly to recharge and get players back to fitness.

'You could see that a number of lads were tiring toward the end, but we stuck at it and sometimes you have to do the ugly stuff to make sure you get the reward of the three points. We have two weeks now to get people back up to speed and we have another test when we return against Manchester City, but we will go there in good heart on the back of yesterday`s result.'

He went on to say.

'As we stand, we`ve got a decent number of points with opportunities to get more when we come back from the break next weekend. Prior to the start of the season everybody feared the fixtures that we had in the opening period, but we`ve got a decent return I feel.'
