Hughes Honest Following Bristol City Loss

Hughes Honest Following Bristol City Loss

Manager Mark Hughes was obviously disappointed to see Stoke City bow out of the EFL Cup to Bristol City yesterday evening but he wasn't going to sugar coat things.

Heading to Ashton Gate for the third round tie, the hosts took the two goal advantage in the second half and ultimately held on for the win in a match they made the better of.

Speaking to the Official Website as he met with the media following the game, a disappointed Hughes knew Stoke had been second best from start to finish.

'They are playing well at the moment but I`m more concerned with how we played and we were very poor tonight. We were second best from start to finish to be perfectly honest. You have to commend Bristol City because they played well and affected us more than we affected them and they fully deserved to go through to the next round.'

Hughes went on to say that Stoke didn't deserve anything from the game and he wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

'We didn`t deserve anything on the night and need to be better than that. We know we have good qualities and are a decent side but every time you put the shirt on you have to be ready to go. We found it difficult to gain a foothold in the game and changed personnel and shape to try and affect them but if we are honest we need to affect the opposition not the other way round.'

'At the end of the day we have come up short, acknowledged that it wasn`t the level we were capable of, and given credit to Bristol City because they played well tonight.'
