Hughes Delighted To Silence Stoke Critics

Manager Mark Hughes was thrilled to see Stoke City take victory over Arsenal, as he knows a huge three points will silence the clubs' critics so far this summer.

Hosting Arsene Wenger's side at the Bet365 Stadium, a debut goal from new loan signing Jese Rodriguez gave us the one nil victory and we certainly had to withstand the pressure from Arsenal as they dominated possession, but Hughes felt it had been a just reward given the criticism from some quarters in the build up to the game.

Speaking to the Official Website as he met with the media post game, a delighted Hughes explained.

'Maybe because of the fixtures we are facing during the early stages of the season, some people saw thought we would be an easy target. They asked questions of our ambition, myself as a manager and the players, and for me, that has been hugely unfair.'

Hughes went on to say that whilst we might not have splashed millions in the transfer market, he feels we've invested sensibly to improve the overall level of the group.

'We have had some criticism because we haven`t splashed millions of pounds of new players, which is bang out of order in my view because our owners have made huge investments in this Club. Our view is that if you are stronger at the end of the window than you were at the start then it is a case of job well done, and in my view we most definitely are. There are still two weeks of the window left open too, so we are very pleased with where we are at right now, and we feel that we can go on and have a really successful season.'

Hughes did admit that handing our Paris Saint-Germain loanee a debut was a gamble, but it was certainly one that paid off for us.

'It was a gamble, there is no doubt about that because he has only had two days training with us. I just thought that given what I had seen from him on the training pitches, and the fact that he was desperate to be involved and make an impression, it was a gamble worth taking. Thankfully, it paid off.'
