Hughes Pleased With Young Boys Penalty Win

Hughes Pleased With Young Boys Penalty Win

Manager Mark Hughes has hailed a spirited fightback from Stoke City in our second Uhrencup clash on Wednesday against BSC Young Boys.

Goals from the opposition in the 43rd and 46th minutes put us at a two nil disadvantage, but a spirited comeback led by Charlie Adam saw us level the scores up.

Adam hit a penalty in the 56th minute before Marc Muniesa hit a 57th minute leveller.

The game then went to penalties, with Stoke taking a four three victory.

Stoke City:

Grant (Haugaard 45), Johnson (Edwards 59), Shawcross (Souttar 59), Wollsheid (Muniesa 45), Pieters (Shenton 66), Adam (Fletcher), Imbula (Sweeney 59), Ngoy (Telford 45), Verlinden (Tymon 45), Bojan (Campbell 66), Berahino (Crouch 45).

Haugaard helped himself to three penalty saves in the shootout.

Speaking to the Official Website following the full time whistle, a pleased Hughes was delighted with how the side are starting to shape up and he was delighted with the mentality to see us fightback for the win.

'I thought it was a good test for us tonight, against a side who kick-off their league campaign against Basel in just 10 days time. They have had three or four more games than us and a few weeks of additional training too, so all things considered I was really pleased. They were a little bit sharper to the ball in certain areas, which is to be expected at this stage, but overall I thought we more than competed against a good quality side.'

Hughes went on to say.

'I thought our energy levels were good, we created plenty of chances and showed a lot of character and determination to come from behind. It was important for us to get back in the game at 2-0 down and we managed to do that, and in the end we ended up winning it on a penalty shootout. We have had two decent games against good quality opposition over the course of the 48 hours and I think we have done ok.'

We have one hand on the trophy now but await the result in the other game, and now go into a friendly against French Champions and Champions League runners up AS Monaco on Saturday afternoon.

'It will be a step up again but that is why we took these three games. We knew it would be a good indicator of where we are at, and the quality we come up against at the weekend will be high. We have good quality ourselves though, and clearly we have the international lads coming back into the equation at the weekend, so hopefully it will be a really good game.'
