Hughes Pleased With Player's Levels

Manager Mark Hughes has said that although the days of footballers returning for pre season training unfit are over, he's still pleased to see the group return with good fitness levels.

The Welshman has of course welcomed the players back for testing and assessment and the hard work has already begun on building them back up to peak fitness levels for the season ahead and from what he's seen this week, he feels they are all in the perfect position to hit the ground running when our pre season campaign officially begins next week.

Speaking to the Official Website Hughes explained.

'It`s not like in my day when all the lads would come back in with an extra bit of timber on, these lads work hard through the summer and come back in fine shape. These guys have a week or so off and they end up missing the gym too much, so they get back into working out, whether that be basketball or tennis or any other alternative sport.'

Hughes went on to say that it's pretty much across the board in football now that people take care of themselves and take pride in their fitness levels even when letting their hair down over the summer.

'They are always active, and to be fair to them they have come back as fit as butchers dogs, which means they can really hit the ground running.'

That of course means that Hughes is eager to get the balls back out rather than just training by running and drills of that sort.

'You need to get the balls out as quickly as possible and I like to get them out on the first day. We have three games next week, so it is important to get out there and working on things. At the end of the day they are footballers, and they are still putting in a lot of fitness work running around the pitch with a ball. In fact, I would say that it is twice as tiring to be running around with a ball than it is without, so for me it has always been important to get the footballs out on day one.'
