Etherington tops released list

Matthew Etherington is amongst eight players that have been released by Stoke City.

The former West Ham United player tops the list of Stoke players released in a mini exodus by manager Mark Hughes.

Stoke under-21 players Lucas Dawson, Kevin Gomez Nieto, Ben Heneghan, Jordan Keane, Jordan Richardson and Karim Rossi have also been released by the Potters.

Etherington, 32, was signed by the Potters in January 2009 from West Ham and has made 177 appearances for the club, although he only made five starts this season.

The winger won the club`s Player of the Season award in his first full season.

He told the Mirror about his release: 'I have not played a lot lately. It has been a great time so I am really sad.'

'But there are no hard feelings."
