Whelan was ready to take on penalty mantle
Glenn Whelan has admitted he was ready to take the penalty against Newcastle.
The midfielder was ready to take over the duty from striker Jonathan Walters.
The Republic of Ireland international had missed his previous 2 spot kicks and was coming under scrutiny for his vital misses.
Whelan told Signal radio: "Jon had missed his last couple of penalties, and we had a chat about it over the last few weeks.
"Jon decided that he would only take the next penalty if he won it but if he didn`t I was ready to take it."
