Stoke prepare bumper deal for Barton

Stoke are prepared to smash their current wage structure and offer Newcastle's Joey Barton £60k a week in an attempt to bring the midfielder to the Britannia - according to the Mirror.

The Potters are the front-runners in the race to sign the 28-year-old after he fell out with the Newcastle management team and was made available on a free transfer.

Pulis apparently met with Barton`s agent on Wednesday in the effort to tie up personal terms before our big kick off against Chelsea on Sunday.

Spurs and Arsenal have been credited with an interest but are put off by his wage demands, leaving the Potters at the front of the queue.

However, the Metro reports Russian giants Zenit St Petersburg are also keen on the merseyside-born star and are willing to offer a lucrative contract worth around £68k a week.

A very exciting prospect if indeed we are prepared to offer £60k a week, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to offer such a deal - perhaps Pulis believes Barton would be such a coup that he'd stop at nothing to get his man.

Meanwhile, Stoke are desperately trying to sign Tottenham duo Peter Crouch and Wilson Palacios but as of yet there have been no reports a fee has been agreed, yet alone personal terms - so this one may run a while longer.

Good player no doubt, but 60k for a 28 yrs old temperamental player with no sell on value? Pulis should think twice.

You're right Dannism, and I think he will! But don't forget he's on a free and we could even give him a massive signing on fee to keep him inside our current wage structure. Signing a player like Barton would ensure our premier league status for at least the next couple of years imo so it'd be a big signing. Absolutely positive that whatever deal Tone is trying to do(if any), it'll suit us, if there's one manager in the prem who won't put his club under any financial jeopardy it's Pulis - he won't be held to ransom :)

It is a big signing. Barton is a good player. Forget his temperament. He is managing to control it recently.

We'll see. He's a good player in all, but is a greedy yob wanting more wages. The fact that he's on a free is the main thing that's attracting me to him

He is so temperamental though. Just look at him today, he starts picking a fight with Arsenal and goes down in a pathetic delayed over reaction to a little slap and then claimed he was punched! Give the lad a BAFTA someone! Ok, so Song stamped on him, yeah that was uncalled for completely, but he's still around when trouble springs up. He should have been sent off today like Sheerer said on MotD, but then Barton tweets slagging Alan off! Wrong thing to do if you care about Newcastle and then slag the legend off publically.

We don`t need thugs like you at the club. Be breed `em tough around here but we recognise a thug when we see one.
