Upson Moving Up?

It seems that Tony Pulis is looking to add another defender to the squad, in particular, England International Mathew Upson.

After his contract with West Ham ran out and the London club refusing to renew it, Upson finds himself in limbo as a free agent, but he could be up for the pickings for Stoke if he can agree personal terms.

Mathew featured in 30 games for the Hammers, proving to be a great presence in defence with his solidarity and consistency. Having also previously represented Arsenal and Birmingham City, he would bring vital Premier League experience to the Britannia Stadium, which would be a great deal for free.

The 32-year-old wouldn`t mind a second chance in the Premier League, however he would have to work hard to compete for the first team against the other three centre-backs in Captain Ryan Shawcross, last year`s top goal scorer Robert Huth and recent addition Jonathan Woodgate.

According to reports, this is set to be unveiled soon, but we`ve all heard that before! Having said that, it does look likely that he`ll come, meaning that Danny Collins could become out of favour with Pulis and on his way out.

That would be a great signing, so long as we can bring in some money for Danny Collins. I don't really rate the lad compared to the other defenders we have; Higginbotham and Wilson and the ones mentioned above.

AS LONG as Collins leaves and Upson joins, that is a massive improvement. But if Collins is still on the wage bill.... hmm. Upson will probably get plenty of game-time in Europe so Ryan/Huth can have a rest, mind. Odd, could be a smokescreen? ;)
Tom_Mckeon
Agreed. Collins out, or at leats out on loan for now to save some wages

Why do people think Collins is leaving as a result of Upson? They play in different positions, if collins does leave it will be because another LB is brought in.

"proving to be a great presence in defence with his solidarity and consistency." Really?
balders72
He played 30 games for them last season, they wouldn't have consistantly played him if he wasn't some sort of use to them

18 months ago, he was attracting the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool after a fantastic season with the Hammers earnt him the Player of the Season award. Collectively, he's made 300 apperances in the Premier League making him a very expierenced player, not to mention his England call-ups.

Yes balders72... really. I like Upson and agree with Ryan
