Stoke trying to cool Ashton deal

Stoke City chairman, Peter Coates, has claimed that he was misquoted when he was reported to have said that they were preparing to sign Dean Ashton.

'We're a million miles away from signing Ashton and it may not even happen' he said last night, contradicting a report published yesterday on the the club's very own Twitter site when they tweeted: 'CHAIRMAN CONFIRMS CLUB ARE IN TALKS WITH WEST HAM REGARDING ENGLAND STRIKER DEAN ASHTON'

It looks like a case of either the Chairman or the club's media machine (or both) jumping the gun on this one, but whatever's the truth, it has alerted other clubs to his availability with West Ham now reported to have put a 10m price tag on the England international.
