Wright-Phillips charged over Delap incident

Shaun Wright-Phillips has been charged by the FA with violent conduct after Stoke's victory over Manchester City on Saturday.

Potters' fans will be pleased that there has been some belated acknowledgment by officials that the winger shares some of the blame for the incident which resulted in Rory Delap being shown a red card. Rory kicked the ball against Wright-Phillips and he retaliated by kicking Delap.

That incident was not seen by referee Martin Atkinson. Having now watched video footage of the incident, Atkinson has told The FA that, had he seen it at the time, he would have also shown Wright-Phillips a red card for violent conduct.

The player now has until tomorrow evening to admit or deny the charge.

It was fortunate for Atkinson that Stoke still went on to win the game, despite being down to ten men, now that he's admitted he should have sent both off.

Well, City fans won't argue that SWP retaliated and according to the letter of the law should have seen red. The thing that really annoys us is the fact that Jose Bosingwa's violent assault on a Liverpool player (which wasn't seen by the ref either) seems to be going unpunished. Think even Stoke fans will agree that this is blatant favouritism towards the "sky 4" teams, Ronaldo and Rooney commited similar offences against Stoke and didn't get punished either did they? Sheer hypocrisy, no matter what side of the fence you are on!

Totally agree - but what referee these days would dare to send the likes of Ronaldho or Rooney off and endure the wrath of people like Ferguson?

SWP has done nothing since different strokes....
