Whelan earns his first senior Irish cap
Glenn Whelan has rounded off a good first season at the Brit by earning his first senior cap for Ireland.
Whelan had already earned 16 Under 21 caps, including a stint as captain, but tonight marks his first senior start in the friendly against Serbia at Croke Park, Dublin.
Since joining the Potters back in January in a £500,000 move from Sheffield Wednesday he settled in well to the Potters team that earned promotion at the start of this month.
Whelan's cap will reignite the discussion as to why his fellow Irishman and Stoke team-mate, Liam Lawrence has still not earned an international cap. His form has just got better and better since signing from Sunderland eighteen months ago, but his only international experience remains as an unused substitute back in February 2006 against Sweden.
