Four released at Stoke

Four players have been released by Stoke City, including club captain Dominic Matteo.

The others are defender Marlon Broomes, keeper Russell Hoult and midfielder Rob Garrett.

Matteo and Hoult joined the Potters midway through the 2006-07 season and then signed one year contracts last summer and it did not seem likely that either would stay. Matteo suffered an injury that kept him out of the final half of the season, whilst Hoult was sent out on loan to Notts County in the wake of Carlo Nash's arrival at the Brit and Steve Simonsen's subsequent demotion to the bench.

Broomes has had a chequered history at the Brit after arriving from Preston in 2005. Despite playing nearly a full first season for the Potters, fans had mixed views about the value of the defender, but he then spent two full seasons out the team through injury.

Garrett had never started a first team match for Stoke but had spent time on loan at Wrexham over the past two seasons, but they were unfortunately relegated from the Football League after finishing bottom of League 2 at the end of this season.

Broomes seemed a decent player a couple of year back when we (QPR) had him on loan, can't seem to get a game! Matteo is 'orrible!

Must be gutting for them to see the club enter the Prem and that they aren't good enough to stay and play!
The Fear
I think we might have had a better opinion of Matteo if he had been fully fit (which he never was even before his last injury) and if he had played in his proper position. Broomes was a bit unlucky in his first season that he never seemed to get played at centre back. Two seasons out with injury and he can't have been surprised to be released. Houlot seems to have done ok at County - hopefully they may offer him a contract. Garrett looked the part at 18 but doesn't seem to have progressed - pity!

A bit surprised that a few others arent going aswell but maybe the club will transfer list them. Matteo was a good signing at the time but not good enough any more. Broomes is a good player but after his injury he was never going to get back in the team, I hope another championship club offers him a deal. Hoult was always going to go with Simonson around and possibly nash and Fulop there isnt much point keeping him
